Mission

GBCA is a nonprofit organization advancing equity and opportunity in, through, and for arts and culture in Greater Baltimore region.

Vision

Artists, and arts, cultural and humanities organizations are valued:

▪ as essential contributors to the social fabric and human spirit of Baltimore;
▪ for their contributions to equitable education, economy, and opportunity;
▪ as problem-solving partners to government and business; and
▪ for both their inherent worth and their power to create change.

Equity, inclusion, access, and justice can be advanced in, and through, arts and culture. The sector is stronger together and can take collective action. The dignity of a broad, complex spectrum of human creative expression must be recognized and respected. The history, evolution, resilience, and aesthetics of Baltimore provide a context for and inform the allocation of GBCA’s resources.

Artists and arts, cultural, and humanities organizations are valued as :

  • Essential to Baltimore’s social fabric and human spirit;
  • For their contributions to equitable education, the economy, and opportunity;
  • Problem-solving partners to government and business;
  • For both their intrinsic value and their power to drive change.

The vision to form GBCA emerged from a series of conversations between 1998 and 2001 among cultural organizations, artists, and supporters about the need for a unified and collective voice for the sector. Incorporated in December 2001, founder Nancy Haragan acted as executive director of GBCA until December 2009. J. Buck Jabaily succeeded Nancy and served as Executive Director until December 2012, when GBCA hired Jeannie L. Howe who leads the organization today.

Since its launch, GBCA has acted as both a catalyst and an incubator for significant programs and initiatives. The organization promotes the cultural community and helps build awareness and audiences through resources such as the Culture Fly event calendar, weekly discount and free ticket promotions, JobsPlus, and its weekly community newsletter.

2003

GBCA has sponsored and co-sponsored symposia and the biannual Mayor’s Town Hall Meeting, and has led numerous community convenings. It has coordinated sector-wide participation in major citywide festivals—including VIVAT! (2003), Tour de Clay (2005), Free Fall Baltimore (2006–present), and The Maps Festival (2008)—and has completed several important sector-wide studies, such as the Collaborative Arts Marketing Study.

2007

From 2007 to 2011, GBCA served as the licensee for the Maryland Cultural Data Project, making Maryland the first state outside Pennsylvania to adopt what is now a nationally recognized tool for organizations and funders. GBCA also hosted RadarRedux.com (2008–2011) and undertook a local Wealth Analysis study (2007).

Since 2008, GBCA has managed the website and awards program for the Baker Artists Awards on behalf of the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund. This innovative platform has attracted thousands of viewers worldwide and awarded more than $1 million to area artists.

The Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance is committed to fairness and to honoring the contributions of people from all backgrounds.

Cultural equity, for us, means upholding values, policies, and practices that ensure all people—including those historically underrepresented by race, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, geography, citizenship status, or religion—are fully included in shaping arts and culture.

This includes equitable support for artists, accessible and vibrant spaces for expression, and fair distribution of programmatic, financial, and informational resources.
